We are a not for profit hula dance organization located in Boulder, Colorado and a member of Boulder County Arts Alliance (BCAA). Our Hálau logo represents the majestic mountains of Colorado and the state flower, the Columbine. The symbol also designates our location and displays the beauty of our surroundings. The mission of our Hálau (school) follows: 1. To assist each student to grow spiritually and culturally through learning the culture of the Hawaiian peoples through dance. Students learn and appreciate the history, translation, vocabulary, and interpretation of each dance learned. Dancers are encouraged to aspire to their full potential and develop a care and respect for the dances, which perpetuate a unique culture of generations past, thus enriching each other and the community. 2. To support all students, regardless of sex, sexual orientation, age, race, religion, and cultural or socioeconomic backgrounds as they dedicate themselves to perpetuate, protect, respect, and live the "Spirit of Aloha" through hula. As King David Kalákaua said, "Hula is the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people." 3. To maintain protocol, history and teachings of past generations. 4. To encourage all affiliated with in our Hálau to express new and innovative ideas and support each other's growth and development in the dance of hula. 5. To spread the "Aloha Spirit" and the Hawaiian culture through dance by performing in the community. Hula is ALOHA. Aloha is more than a word of greeting or farewell or a salutation. Aloha means mutual regard and affection and extends warmth in caring with no obligation in return. Aloha is the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other person for collective existence. Aloha means to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen and to know the unknowable. |
